Cronut Recipe
Croissant and a donut = cronut! Honestly what could be better? Here is the simple way you can make your own at home.
For the dough you will need:
Two tubes of crescent dough (each tube makes two donuts)
Oil to fry it in, we used canola oil. You want about 2 inches of oil in the pan.
3 inch circular cookie cutter and a 1 inch circle to cut out the center.
Toppings: 1 cup powdered sugar, lemon juice and zest, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.
Each step is shown below for further assistance. Preheat your oil, and you want to get it up to 350 before frying. While that's heating make the donuts. Open both tubes of dough, and pair them off into two triangles. Put two triangles together to make a rectangle and pinch the seams. Next you will stack two rectangles on top of one another and press together. Don't flatten them, but just lightly make sure they stick together. Then you will fold them width wise. You will use the cookie cutter to make the circle and remove any excess dough (which you can save), and then use the 1 inch circle to cut out the center. Repeat. Each tube should make 2 donuts, which end up being layers of flaky goodness.
Being extremely careful with the oil, slowly add the donuts using tongs or a skimmer spoon. You want to fry them for about 90 seconds on each side until they are really golden brown. You don't want the center dough under cooked. Removed from the oil and place on a plate with paper towels or a cooling rack with paper towel below it.
Combine the granulated sugar and the cinnamon, and I personally sprinkle that on the cronut while it is still warm. While they cool I mix the lemon juice with the powered sugar. I add the lemon juice until it becomes a glaze like consistently. So add the lemon juice slowly while stirring. Once the cronut is cool the dip the donut in the glaze and top with some lemon zest.
Now you can add whatever toppings you want and get creative with fillings. My husband loves to add jam into his. You could make vanilla or chocolate glaze, or use vanilla pudding as a filling. The options are endless. Once you can make the cronut, the rest is up to you.
Enjoy!!!!
